Navigating the Social Networking “Jungle”

Posted on June 01, 2009

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Second life – we are all being over run with where is the best source for us to participate in the social networking explosion.  The point now is not whether we should be engaged, but how!

Keeping in mind the “look before you leap” concept, before any organization decides to engage in social networking it is advisable to investigate what are your strategic objectives\goals that can be supported through the use of social media.  You certainly do not need to look very far to see how many organizations have clearly developed a strategy before deploying their chosen form of social media (it probably should not come as a big surprise that those companies with very recognizable brands – Harley Davidson, Coke, etc. have a clear strategy).

As with any good strategy, it is very important to conduct research and understand who your target audience will be for your messaging.  A good first step is to know what forms of social media your target audience is already using – why not take advantage of what is already created!  Also, be sure that your social networking strategy becomes part of your overall communications and marketing strategy.

Most of all, remember the core purpose of using social media – engagement – engagement – engagement!
